Mission Statement
The ARMC Residencies sole objective is to train physicians who are exceedingly competent in academic and clinical medicine and surgery, who practice medicine with kindness and compassion, who communicate with respectful logical actions and words, who integrate Osteopathic philosophy into the care of the entire person, who progressively improve the individual and societal practice of medicine fostering education, camaraderie and cooperation, who excel in the business and professional aspect of medicine nurturing growth, research, teaching, and best standards of practice, and who can solidify the many facets of medicine leading to improved patient and public instruction and confidence.Institution
Arrowhead Regional Medical Center is a state-of-the-art 400+ bed facility featuring the newest technology in the field of patient care. The Medical Center is the host to a 24-hour Emergency Department, Level II Trauma Center, three Family Health Centers and the only Burn Center serving San Bernardino, Riverside, Inyo and Mono counties. ARMC is deeply devoted to the education of Osteopathic Students, Interns, and Residents. ARMC makes the education of Osteopathic residents, interns, and students paramount. In order to continue its mandate to provide a well-rounded medical education program, ARMC has coordinated medical education supervision, coordination, direction and jurisdiction by formulating the Office of Graduate Medical Education consisting of the DME, ADME, residency coordinator for Internship, residency coordinators from all residency programs, and staff.
ARMC’s commitment to Graduate Medical Education has also resulted in housestaff committee development. The Residency Advisory Committee (RAC) consists of members from each residency inclusive of the Traditional Internship Program. The RAC meets monthly to discuss resident/intern issues. Three members of the RAC are then appointed by the RAC to serve as voting members of ARMC OMEC. In addition to three voting seats on OMEC, one RAC selected member of RAC, and two alternates are appointed to OPTI-West OGME committee, which meets quarterly.
OMEC is an independent medical staff committee. It tasks and powers have allowed it to propel Medical Education, developing, revising, monitoring, and strengthening medical education policies, procedures, commitments, and outcomes. ARMC embraces its Osteopathic programs and Osteopathic Core Competencies. OPP&OMT are required of all AOA housestaff. Mandated OPP&OMT lectures and hands-on workshops occur monthly. An ARMC employee wellness OMT Clinic is being developed which will allow Interns and Residents an opportunity to showcase their unique skills. Core Competency Lectures also take place monthly; however, both are only 2 of the approximately 70 housestaff lectures per month.
RESIDENCIES
Emergency Medicine
Our proactive attending physicians strive to provide an excellent EM residency training program that is geared toward a comprehensive educational experience. The EM faculty consists of ten full-time residency trained/board certified emergency attending physicians and several part-time physicians. ARMC, with three helicopter pads, is a busy, county-owned, medical/surgical, Trauma and Burn Center, providing care to a large urban indigent population residing in the Inland Empire with an annual census greater than 100,000 patients. Residents thus receive extraordinary training in trauma and resuscitation of critically ill patients. Arrowhead has been a designated trauma center since 1985. The ED is a fully independent hospital department with a well-developed emergency medical services system and fully operating paramedic based station. The ED has almost 50 beds, organized into sections correlating with the need for levels of patient care. The RME (Rapid Medical Evaluation) area consists of a walk-in type of setting in which patients are seen for urgent care problems and also screened for a higher level of care.Family Medicine
In the early 1950s with the sponsoring of a General Practice Residency the San Bernardino County Medical Center made a commitment to primary care. In 1969, it gained accreditation for a Family Practice Residency Program. The entire supporting institution devotes its major educational efforts to the family medicine program. In 1999 the Medical Center was moved to a new hospital. The name has changed to Arrowhead Regional Medical Center. It has state-of-the-art earthquake-safe architectural design and state-of-the-art medical care delivery systems. Our emphasis in the Family Medicine Residency is to graduate a family physician who is a well-trained clinician in all the major clinical disciplines, as well as in the psychological and preventative aspects of patient care. Working together, the faculty and residents are continually reevaluating our program and curriculum to adapt to the ever-increasing complexity and sophistication of health care. Our effort is directed toward combining current trends in family medicine training with a strong background in clinical skills, while attempting to tailor the training to the needs and interests of each resident.
General Surgery
It is a comprehensive training program that will provide surgical residents the opportunity to acquire a broad cognitive understanding of human biology as it relates to diseases in which surgery can play a role in the recovery of ill individuals. It was created in accordance with the guidelines set forth by the American Osteopathic Association (AOA). The residency program is five years in length beginning with the OGME-1 (PGY-1) level that is a Specialty Track linked to the funded for eight positions, with two of these positions being filled each academic year, OGME 2 to 5. On completion of the program,The resident will have received experience in all aspects of general surgery, including that of burn and trauma. The resident will receive experience in inpatient and outpatient care of both elective and emergent problems. The outpatient clinic experience is also quite varied with specialty clinics in burn and breast.
Internal Medicine
The academic environment, the diverse patient population, the well-trained internal medicine attending physicians, and the exposure to a great variety of illnesses will help ensure the training of a well- rounded, highly skilled internist. The academic portion of the program entails morning case conferences, monthly journal clubs, board review sessions, lectures in a variety of internal medicine topics, and pre-clinic talks. As ARMC is a county hospital, the internal medicine housestaff are exposed to a diversified patient population and learn to embrace the important cultural and religious aspects of providing medical care. The medicine residents are also supervised by internal medicine attending physicians who have both academic and clinical experiences. Bedside teaching, mini-lectures, and feed-back are a routine part of daily rounds. Finally, the variety of disease processes and management of severe illnesses will ensure that the trainee has a broad exposure of diverse illnesses and becomes a competent and caring internist.
Neurosurgery
The ARMC Neurosurgery Residency Program, currently the largest accredited Osteopathic neurosurgery program in the USA, attracts outstanding candidates from across the country for its twelve total positions. Residents are accepted into linked positions as AOA-accredited interns prior to their five years of neurosurgery training. In any given year, two to three residents are accepted into the Program. There are currently twelve Faculty Neurosurgeons. ARMC Neurosurgery Residents also rotate through three other hospitals, including Riverside Country Regional Medical Center in Moreno Valley, Kaiser Permanente in Fontana and Desert Regional Medical Center in Palm Springs. While the training emphasizes mainstream general neurosurgery, residents are exposed to significant volumes of brain tumors, complex spine instrumentation, vascular neurosurgery, craniospinal trauma, and neurointensive care. All residents are encouraged to pursue subspecialty fellowship training after graduation, and thus far 100% of our graduates have gone on to sub-specialization. Clinical acumen is greatly emphasized, with daily bedside teaching and rounds; there is ample clinic experience under close faculty supervision. The pursuit of academic excellence is an integral part of this Program, with frequent didactic teaching sessions, regular journal clubs, case conferences, and board exam preparation sessions. Overall, the primary goal of this Program is to produce compassionate and competent mainstream Neurosurgeons with impeccable technical skills, exceptional clinical and surgical judgment, and a passion for life-long learning.
OB/Gyn
The residency program in Obstetrics and Gynecology at Arrowhead Regional Medical Center will provide for resident physicians to achieve knowledge, skill and attitudes essential to primary health care for women within the scope of Obstetrics and Gynecology as designed by the American Osteopathic Association. This program will present a structured educational experience in continuity with undergraduate and continuing medical education, provide for increasing responsibility with formal instruction and critical evaluation, while integrating osteopathic principles and practice. Our program is an accredited four year training program offering both a traditional program and a specialty track program. Currently we have 12 AOA approved residency positions, with 11 positions funded and filled. Residents accepted into the program receive an extensive education in women’s primary health care, obstetrics, gynecology, and related subspecialties.
Traditional
The Traditional Year Program offers broad-based clinical experience for residents planning to enter residencies such as Anesthesiology, Radiology, Dermatology, PMR, Occupational Medicine, Emergency Medicine, and Ophthalmology. The training has also proven excellent for residents entering General Surgery and Family Practice. The program has 32 AOA-accredited training spots. The Medical Center trains primarily family practice and traditional year residents and, therefore, residents do not find they are in competition with other specialties. The program excels in providing the opportunity for hands-on experience that is critical for physicians to become both capable and confident. Our graduates frequently report back to us that they are better prepared for their ongoing training than are their colleagues.
