A commitment to education Teaching has long been a part of Samaritan Health Services’ mission. Our experienced and thoughtful physicians have established a tradition of teaching medical students through an association with Western University College of Osteopathic Medicine of the Pacific. Our commitment to medical education is exemplified by plans to establish Oregon’s first osteopathic medical school in 2011 within a brand-new health sciences campus.

Samaritan Health Services (SHS) is pleased to welcome its first osteopathic residency class in July 2009. Fully accredited by the American Osteopathic Association Division of Postdoctoral Training for the specialties of Family Medicine, Internal Medicine and Psychiatry, our programs provide first-class educational and personal enrichment. And, perhaps most importantly, offer the opportunity to be part of our one-of-a-kind medical community, where strong values have built a solid foundation for excellence.

 About us

Formed in the late 1990s, SHS is a non-profit, Oregon-based network of hospitals, physicians, insurance plans and a senior care facility. The network serves approximately 250,000 residents in Linn, Benton, Lincoln and portions of Polk and Marion counties. Of our five affiliated hospitals, Good Samaritan Regional Medical Center in Corvallis is the largest and offers more than 22 medical specialties including comprehensive cancer care, a full-service heart and vascular institute, sleep center, neurosurgery, integrative medicine and other regional services. Located in a diverse and thriving college town, the medical center is licensed to operate 188 beds and is one of only three Level 2 trauma centers in the state.

Samaritan Health Services

Residents can enjoy the natural beauty of the Pacific Northwest and the cultural opportunities of a university town, as the programs are organized to balance an excellent learning environment with a sustainable lifestyle.

 Driven by our values Samaritan Health Services’ employees are set apart by our passion to serve our neighbors, our communities. We are proud of the physicians, nurses and other health care providers who contribute to the well-being of our communities. Many are leaders and innovators in their field. Our employees are the key to our success. With your collaboration and dedication, we will continually improve the standards for progressive community care. As we expand our medical education programs, we are looking for resident applicants who not only demonstrate academic excellence and exceptional interpersonal skills, but for those who are self-motivated and recognize the unique opportunities that our new program offers. We’re looking for people who want to be medical pioneers—part of the first class of a residency program that will launch the careers of exceptional physicians.

Our residency training programs

Family Medicine

The Family Medicine residency program offers a dynamic and comprehensive learning experience with many hands-on opportunities coupled with excellent didactic training. This diverse learning experience prepares family physicians to provide broad-based health care, assume leadership roles in medicine and in the community and contribute to the evolving knowledge base of the specialty of family medicine.  Opportunities for further exposure to Family Medicine are enabled through formal partnerships with area hospital systems, including Legacy Health System in Portland.The evolving nature of the program presents residents with the potential opportunity to earn a Master’s degree in medical education or public health, experience an overseas rotation and develop skills in Sports Medicine working with PAC-10 athletes. As a new program, we are eager to develop family physicians for the future and are looking for mature, self-directed applicants to comprise our first class of osteopathic residents.  Our hospital system and teaching physicians are dedicated to excellence and this program will graduate great physicians and leaders in our discipline.   Program Director:  Dr. Mike Hudson mhudson@samhealth.org  • (541) 768-4906

Internal Medicine

Our Internal Medicine residency program includes rotations at Good Samaritan Regional Medical Center where strong cardiology, cardiovascular surgery, oncology and gastroenterology programs offer ample learning opportunities with both high-tech and high-touch components.  Rotations will also take residents to Legacy Emanuel Hospital in Portland, which is Oregon’s busiest Level 1 trauma center and the only Burn Center between Seattle and Sacramento.  Legacy Emanuel has an active Internal Medicine residency program and its facilities and staff will be available for PGY1 rotations in Critical Care and Emergency Care (temporary housing will be provided).

These rotations offer the best of both worlds:  life in Corvallis, recognized as one of America’s most livable cities, and the experience of rotations in a large metropolitan hospital.

As a new program, PGY2 and PGY3 residents will not be on staff during the 2009-2010 academic year.  Our PGY1 residents will have the unique opportunity to work intimately with our experienced academic hospitalist staff physicians who provide 24-hour care during their ward rotations.

Our faculty includes all major specialties and an excellent group of primary care internists who are committed to both didactic and patient-specific teaching.

Psychiatry

The Psychiatry Residency Program is a four-year program with inpatient rotations based at Good Samaritan Regional Medical Center.  In addition, community rotations, electives, clinical and administrative experiences are available throughout the state and in county and private agencies in the area.

The goal of our Psychiatry residency program is to develop compassionate and excellent physicians who:

·         Are recovery-oriented, trauma-informed and proficient in best practices including biologic, social and psychological approaches;

·         Are proficient in the early identification, prevention and intervention of psychiatric disorders across all age groups;

·         Provide comprehensive hospital psychiatric care;

·         Provide outpatient psychiatric care including psychotherapy and biological approaches;

·         Have the prerequisite foundation for further high quality fellowship training in a psychiatry subspecialty;

·         Are consummate professionals with a strong sense of ethics and responsibility to their patients, communities and profession;

·         Are prepared to participate in the future of medicine.
